Which Republican Senators Are Most Likely to Vote for TPP?
The House voted Thursday to fast-track a controversial trade deal, making it the first time that the House has voted on the controversial Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) without a single Republican vote.
The vote comes after the Senate approved the deal earlier this month.
Democrats are seeking to use the fast-tracking power to stop the agreement’s passage.
Democrats say the deal’s provisions would make it harder for U.S. companies to compete in foreign markets, hurt the environment and reduce wages for American workers.
President Donald Trump’s top trade negotiator, Michael Froman, said Thursday that the deal “has no chance of being implemented and that the president and his administration have every intention of getting it done.”
Trump tweeted Thursday that he supports fast-tracking the TPP, but said that his administration would continue to make sure the deal passes.
“This deal will be passed.
We’ll make sure it’s done,” Trump said.
“I’m doing the best I can.
I hope it will be done.”
